Fibroscan Appointment

If you are interested in our fatty liver disease studies, you may be offered a fibroscan procedure at our office.

Liver Ultrasound (Fibroscan) utilizes sound waves to make images of the inside of the liver.

Liver Ultrasound (Fibroscan) Instructions:

  • Research staff will move a probe over your upper abdomen to take pictures of your liver.
  • The probe will have a small amount of cool gel on the end.
  • Images collected are not a complete medical review.
  • If any unexpected observations are identified, the research physician will notify you.
  • Prior to the fibroscan, you will be asked to fast for at least 4 hours; plain water is allowed during this time.

Liver Ultrasound (Fibroscan) Risks:

  • Fasting could cause symptoms such as headache, fainting, dizziness, stomach discomfort, and/or possibly hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
  • If you have diabetes, some of the medications you take, as well as the fasting requested, can cause certain risks, including low blood sugar levels. If you experience these symptoms, follow the instructions of your regular doctor to correct them, for example, self-measurement of your blood sugar, eating plain candy, or drinking fruit juice.
